The institute is shortly called as AIIH & PH and it was established in the capital state of the state of West Bengal in the year 1932 on the 30th of December. The college holds the pride of being the only PG institute of its kind in the nation devoted towards teaching and research in different fields of health and related sciences. The administrative control of the institution lies with the Director General of Health Services, New Delhi under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Indian Government.

The AIIH & PH was operating as a constituent unit of the Calcutta University and from the year 1932, the institute has been working in close collaboration with the faculty of School of Tropical Medicine in the Indian state of West Bengal.
