Procedure to become a Cosmologist
Aspirants seeking to become a Cosmologist should pass +2 with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as the main subjects. They have to pursue B.Tech or any other graduation in Aviation and Space science related disciplines and follow it up with a post-graduation. Aspirants can enhance their career prospects by doing a Ph.D also.
Eligibility Requirements
Aspirants can begin their academics in the undergraduate level by pursuing a Bachelor of Technology Degree or a Bachelor of Science Degree. Admission to these courses will be based on the entrance examinations conducted by the concerned colleges and/or the marks received in the qualifying exam. Aspirants can choose from courses like Bachelor of Technology in Aerospace Engineering, Avionics, Physical Sciences, Astronomy, Bachelor of Science in Physics.
Following the successful completion of the Bachelor’s degree, aspirants can further go ahead for a Master of Technology in Propulsion, RF and Microwave Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, Optical Engineering, Master of Science in Astrophysics or Physics. To obtain a Master of Technology, candidates have to successfully complete the relevant Bachelor programme or have the desired GATE score. Admissions to the M.Sc courses are based on the entrance examinations conducted by the institutions and the marks obtained in the qualifying B.Sc degree.
A Ph.D in the relevant area can further enhance the credentials of the candidate. A thesis has to be submitted to the institution as part of admission to the Ph.D program. Candidates should take the specified entrance examination. IIST is one of the preferred institutions in India to pursue courses in fields related to cosmology.
Application & Selection Procedure
While each level of education has distinct selection procedures, there are certain common modalities that needs to be followed.
Applications in a prescribed format have to be sent to the concerned institutions. All the eligibility criteria concerning age limit will have to be met. Academic records and other relevant criteria will be the basis on which the candidates will be short-listed.
Admissions to the various levels require the candidate to pass the relevant entrance examination. While admissions to the Bachelors and Masters degrees specify entrance examinations by the concerned institutions or GATE, Ph.D candidates have to clear the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) Examination. Short-listed candidates will have to face the interview board.
Relevant websites have to be referred to get specific details. Once the academic requirements have been completed, aspirants can seek a career as Research Scientist, Quantitative Analyst, Lecturer, Statistician Developer, Optical Engineer etc. with institutions like ISRO.
