I believe you are talking about National Eligibility Test by University Grants Commission (UGC). Well since you have completed post graduation and do meet percentage requirement as well, I don't see why you can't appear for National Eligibility Test.

As far as your subject is concerned, it depends on the post graduation course and has nothing to do with your graduation course. Which means that if you have completed MA in English then your subject for National Eligibility Test would be "English".

So now you can start preparation for the National Eligibility Test without any confusion. The test will be conducted in June 2013. The date of registering will be issued in advance by the University Grants Commission. You would be able to apply for it online through the following website - http://ugcnetonline.in

NET Eligibility

1. You should be citizen of India.

2. A master degree in any discipline from a recognized university.

3. University should be recognized by University Grants Commission.

4. Minimum of 55 percent marks in master degree.

5. SC/ST require 50 percent marks.

6. Final year post graduation students are also eligible.

7. Such students will need to submit degree in 2 years.

8. Your NET subject would be (English).

9. There is no restriction on number of attempts.

Age Limit

1. The age limit is 28 years for JRF.

2. There is 3 years relaxation for OBC.

3. SC/ST are eligible for 5 years relaxation.

4. There is no upper age limit for college lectureship.

Dear There,

The acronym for UGC is University Grants Commission.

I think you are talking about NET(National Eligibility Test) examination, which is conducted by UPSC every year.

The eligibility criteria required for the NET examination are prescribed as below:-

* Either post- graduate or a final year student of post-graduation with a minimum of 55% marks (50% marks for SC/ST contendors) from UGC recognised university.

* Age limit- 20-28 yrs for JRF and no age bar for Lecturership.

* Age relaxation- 3 yrs for OBC and 5 yrs for SC/ST contendors.

* Nationality- Indian.

Hope the above mentioned will help you to get the information you were searching for.
