Unfortunately you can not get admission in National Insitute of Technology in the second year which is commonly known as the lateral entry. The reason is that NIT does not support lateral entry. Similar is the case for Indian Institute of Technology.


Therefore you can not get lateral entry in NIT. You will have to consider some other option. For admission in NIT, candidate must appear for AIEEE or ISEET from 2013. Unless you appear for the entrance exam you won't get admission in National Institute of Technology. The eligibility criteria for entrance exam is 12th with PCM as the subjects and at least 40 percent marks.


Since diploma course is not considered equivelant to 12th there is no way to seek admission in NIT.However there are various colleges in India that will offer you admission through lateral entry.


Apart from IIT and NIT, most colleges in India offer lateral entry for diploma students. These colleges do reserve some seats for lateral entry students. Therefore it would be wise to seek admission in other colleges rather than NIT or IIT.


The admission is given through entrance exam called Lateral Entry Engineering Test (LEET). You will have to appear in this exam for lateral entry admission. However there are colleges who would offer direct admission or may conduct their own entrance exam.


If you want admission in B.Tech through lateral entry then you must have minimum of 50/60 percent marks.

Hi friend,

I am really sorry to say that reputed Colleges like NITs,IITs does not offer Engineering admissions to Diploma holders.But you need not to worry,there are many other reputed Colleges which offers admissions to Diploma holders,but you must have completed your Diploma course with at least 60% marks from a recognized State Board of Technical Education.

Most prestigious Engineering Colleges offering Lateral entry admissions on the basis of Entrance Test are:

Punjab University,Chandigarh.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology,Patiala.

Guru Gobind Singh IP University,Delhi.

Sant Longoval Institute of Engineering and Technology,Sangrur.

Harcourt Butler Technological Institute,Kanpur.

On the basis of your rank in the Entrance test,you will be allotted a particular branch.If you want good College then go for Entrance Tests and perform well in order to get trade of your own choice.There are some Colleges which offers admission on the basis of Entrance Test,whereas some offers admission on the basis of Merit
