All the RTOs are promoted from Addl. RTO/Asst. RTO or IMV (Inspector of Motor Vehicles) which are all Group B posts carrying a Grade Pay of Rs. 4600/-. The exam for these posts are conducted by the Public Service Commission of the respective state. To become eligible for these posts, the minimum educational qualification is either a bachelor degree in Automobile Engineering or in Mechanical Engineering with Automobile Engineering as a subject. Syllabus is as per the Bachelor degree.

Someone can also opt for Jr. MVI posts (Junior Motor Vehicle Inspector) which is also a Group B post carrying a Grade Pay of Rs. 4200/- and are conducted by the Staffa Selection Commission of the respective state. For, this a Diploma in either Automobile or Mechanical is essential along with at least a Minimum of one year work Experience from any recognized Automobile/Mechanical workshop. From this, after some years, the person may get promoted as an IMV and maybe later as an RTO.

The written exams are generally MCQ type. If qualified in the written, then there will be Personal Interview after which the Final selection is made.

Best Wishes.
