you first need to go through the exam pattern and syllabus of IAS which is known as civil service examination. Read the notification of 2011 of civil service examination for that . you can download that in both hindi and english from following links.

First read it carefully , then choose your subjects from given list and then start reading . Start with ncert first to clear the basics. You have to apear for prelims and mains both . From year 2011 paper 2 of prelims is replaced with aptitude test which is known as civil service aptitude test . Also check the papers of General studies for better understanding of the nature of exam .

* age 21 to 30 years
5 years relax for Sc/ST
3 years for OBC

*4 times for general candidate

It is of purely objective type and qualifying exam...

(Paper II) (200 marks)

• General mental ability
• Basic numeracy(Class X level)
• English language comprehension skills (Class X level)

It is of purely subjective type and followed by interview....
Based on the overall ranking and your choice of cadre, you will be provided IFS (Indian Foreign Service), IAS or IPS. The higher your rank, the choice is with you.

Eligibility criteria for IAS exam is..

1. Graduation in any stream from a recognize university college.
2. The age between 21 to 30 years for general category Age relaxation is provided for OBC SC/ST candidates.
3. No. of attempt 4times OBC 7times abs ST/SC no limit.



Preliminary Examination consists of Two Papers-

Paper I — General Studies 150 marks

Paper II — An Optional subject 300 marks.
