Is an M.Tech 1st year student eligible for Group 1 exam? List of books that should be referred

hi, now i am doing m.tech first year,i am interested to prepare for group 1, can i apply for group 1 now or not. if i can, then pls help me how to prepare for group 1 exams............i dont have any knowledge in group 1.. what books i have refer for preparing exams.....
