Group D is the lowest rung of employment in Government including Railways. Generally it is for assisting the skilled servants like giving the tools/equipment during maintenance/troubleshooting or menial jobs like cleaning, etc. In short, a Group D staff has to merely carry out the instructions given to him without very much applying his mind or discretion.

In Railways, the recruitment is through the respetcive Regional Board.

They can get promoted to semi-skilled category through departmental quota or limited departmental competitive examinations.
