There are many subjects in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, which the student can choose from as his optional subject. The students have to take the test on General Studies and one optional subject for the preliminary examination. They are eligible to sit for the mains only when they clear the preliminary examination. The students who have studied LAW in the undergraduate level or those who think they are comfortable with LAW can take it as an optional subject. The subject is a scoring one. The pattern of the LAW preliminary examination is given below.

The exam for LAW consists of multiple choice type questions, 120 in number. The maximum marks of the paper are 300 with all the questions carrying equal marks. The duration of the exam is two hours. Among the four options given with each questions only one is correct. Separate answer sheet is provided to the students to mark the answer on. Negative marking is applicable for wrong answer. For a wrong answer 33% of the marks of that question will be deducted. Same penalty is levied for multiple answers as they are also treated as wrong answers. Questions left unanswered do not attract any penalty.
