University of Mumbai Arts-English Literature TYBA 20th Century British Literature Papers are aimed at providing students with a clear idea of modernist literature that emanated from England from 1900, and the various global movements in the arts that affected it. Course topics include novels by DH Lawrence, plays by John Osborne, poetry by WH Auden, TS Eliot, and WB Yeats and so on. The topics covered include stream of consciousness theory, imagist poetry, socio-political factors that affected 20th century British writing, the distinction between modernism and modernity and so on. Specific texts include William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Osborne’s Look Back in Anger and DH Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers. British women novelists of the early twentieth century like Virginia Woolf can also be part of the course. The questions offered in this paper are conceptual, and text based. The basic and key concepts of modernism are sought to be integrated into the student’s reading of the specific texts in the syllabus.
