This entrance exam has two stages:

On the basis of JEE mains score and 10+2 percentage of marks, admission to NITs and government engineering college is give. Candidates who are in top 1.5 lacs of JEE mains are eligible for the JEE advanced. This stage has a separate rank list on the basis of which admission in IIT is given.

For JEE mains only three attempts are allowed and for advanced, two consecutive attempts are there. For example if a candidate appear for 10+2 board exam in 2016, he can appear for Mains in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and for advanced in 2016 and 2017 only.
