The city of Srinagar is the summer capital of the state of Jammu & Kashmir, while the winter capital of the state is Jammu. Education in the state is grouped into primary, middle, high secondary, college and university level education.

The city of Srinagar is acting as the home for top universities like University of Kashmir and HNB Garhwal University. A number of colleges in the city are affiliated to the University of Kashmir, which includes both government and private colleges. Medical College:

Government Medical College in Srinagar holds the pride of being the first medical college of Independent India established in the year 1959 and the college held one among the top five medical colleges position for several decades. The college offers MBBS and MD/MS and diploma courses in different branches of medicine. The college admits students to these courses based on the performance of the students in the entrance examination, which is held during the month of June every year for MBBS and during the month of March-April for higher specialty courses.

Dental College:

Government Dental College located in Srinagar offers Bachelor of Dental Surgery Course and Master of Dental Surgery course with specialization in periodontics, oral surgery and conservative dentistry. This college is approved by the Dental Council of India and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir.

Education Colleges:

Two Government run educational colleges are functioning in the city of Srinagar; one college is meant for B. Ed and M. Ed courses, while the other college is meant for B.P. Ed and M.P. Ed courses. For getting admission to these colleges, candidates must have completed their degree course in any discipline with not less than 50% of marks (45% in the case of candidates falling under reserved category). Admission to these colleges is made based on the performance of the students in the entrance examination conducted by the Board of Professional Entrance Examination.

Arts & Science Colleges:

The government-run arts & science colleges offer courses like Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce & Bachelor of Science at the UG level and most of these colleges are affiliated to the University of Kashmir

Polytechnic Colleges:

Government Polytechnic Colleges offer diploma education in the following branches of engineering:

Electronics Engineering

Automobile engineering

Mechanical engineering

Civil engineering

These government-run colleges are contributing towards the educational development of not only the city of Srinagar, but also towards the educational development of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. In addition to these government colleges, many private colleges are also contributing towards the educational scenario of the city.
