Himachal Pradesh Board conducts examinations for class 12th through various associated government and private schools across the Himachal Pradesh. The biology paper is an optional paper and is to be answered by those science students who have opted for this subject.

The entire paper is divided into four sections.

Paper pattern and number of questions asked

There are a total of twenty eight questions, all of which must be compulsorily answered. There are four sections in this paper. The first section consists of five multiple type questions. The second section consists of ten short answer questions which are to be answered in thirty to forty words. The third section consists of eight questions which have to be answered in about eighty words and two questions which have to be answered in one hundred and twenty words. The fourth section consists of one question which has to be answered in one hundred and forty words and two questions which have to be answered in around one hundred fifty to one hundred seventy words.

Division of marks

The entire paper is of sixty marks. The first section is of five marks, one mark for each of the multiple choice questions. The second section is of fifteen marks offering one and a half marks for each of the ten short answer questions. The first eight questions of the third section are of two and a half marks each and the last two questions of this section are of three marks each, hence summing up to a total of twenty six marks. The fourth section has one question of four marks and two questions of five mark each, hence adding up to a total of fourteen marks.
