The university was established in 1987, by the state legislature of Chhatisgarh, at Raipur. The main aim behind its establishment was to give a new dimension and improve the development of Chhatisgarh, which is commonly called the Rice Bowl of India, in the field of agriculture. The university envisions making provisions for education in the areas of allied science and agriculture so as to impart knowledge to the people involved in agriculture. Also, to consider the actions of research work in agriculture and other allied sciences, to undertake extension programs on fields in order to consider the evolved technologies and solutions and thus, improve the productivity. It makes collaborations with research institutions at state level, National and even International levels. It undertakes all such purposes relating agriculture so that the socio-economic conditions of rural people can be improved.

The university has four faculties, which are, faculty of agriculture, veterinary and animal husbandry, dairy, and agricultural engineering. These faculties have their respective constituent colleges which are further having different departments, dealing with several courses.

The university, besides the regular courses, organizes sports activities on a regular basis. Inter college competitions in sports are conducted regularly with students participating from various colleges. The selected teams also participate in competitions on university level. This helps students rejuvenate and develop along different dimensions of their personality.

The university also started National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme for the students.

There is Nehru Library in the University serving as a source of reference books, course books, journals, magazines etc. The colleges also have their respective libraries. Documentation, photocopy facilities are also provided within the campus.

Admissions in the university are on the basis of an entrance examination conducted by the university. The candidate must satisfy the eligibility criteria and also qualify in the merit list of the entrance examination following which he/she gets admission in the university.
