Cochin University of Science and Technology was established in the year 1971 with the name of University of Cochin. The formation of the university was the obligation from the state government of Kerala towards the new scientific policy resolution passed by the Indian Government in the year 1958 on the 4th of March.

The main focus of the university is the development of higher education with specific focus on research and post-graduate studies in commerce, industry, technology and applied science. Later the university was named as Cochin University of Science and Technology in the year 1986 on the month of February. The university has two campuses of which the main campus and another campus is situated at Kochi and the third campus is situated at Kuttanad. Cochin University of Science and Technology award degree in different fields of engineering and related subjects not only at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, but also in the doctoral levels as well. Admission of students to the university is made on the basis of the marks secured on the All India Entrance Examination called as Common Admission Test. In addition to this common examination, different departmental admission tests are conducted for some post-graduate level courses.

The university is offering courses under nine different faculties of education namely social sciences, medical sciences, marine sciences, law, humanities, environmental studies, engineering, technology and science and 29 departments are functioning under the university. The university has been selected by the University Grants Commission as the centre for excellence in the field of opto-electronic and laser sciences and for this purpose the university has set up a new center called as CELOS.

The Human Resource Development’s Union Ministry of has recognized the legal studies school functioning under the university as a depository of intellectual property rights.
