Birla Institute of Technology & Science at Pilani is popularly called as BITS, Pilani and it was previously one of the prominent institutions for engineering education in India. Due to the best quality education offered by the institution, it was converted as Deemed University under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act. The main focus of the university is conferring engineering and science related degrees and the university came into existence as an institution in the year 1929. It was conferred with the status of deemed to be university in the year 1964 and from then it is growing as one of the best private universities in the nation.
In addition to the main campus at Pilani, the university also has campuses at Hyderabad, Goa and Dubai and it also has an extension centre in the city of Bangalore. Even though, the university has campuses has three campuses in different places other than the main campus, the right for conferring degrees rests only with the BITS at main campus of Pilani. By establishing its campus in Dubai, the university holds the pride of being the only Indian institution to have set up its first campus outside the nation. In addition to these courses, BITS, Pilani also confers Ph. D under on-campus and off-campus schemes through almost all its departments and the university also offers fellowhips to appropriate candidates. Admission of students to the Engineering courses offered by the university is done based on the merit secured by the candidates in the entrance examination conducted by the university on its own called as BITSAT. There is heavy competition among students not only from Rajasthan, but also from other states as well for getting admission into BITS, Pilani and therefore different methods are being followed by the students by taking up coaching classes and taking up mock tests for clearing the BITSAT Examination.
Thus, BITS, which began its journey as a institutions has developed into a university and it still continues to offer its service to the technical education industry.
