Gujarat Ayurved University came into existence in the year 1967 and the university was established through an act of the state legislative assembly of Gujarat. The university holds the pride of being the first statutory university of its not only at the national level, but also at the international level devoted exclusively for the purpose of education and research in the field of Ayurvedic Medicine. The special status enjoyed by the university can be understood from the administrative link it enjoys with both the State and Central Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

It is an autonomous body fully funded by the Gujarat State Government. The university not only confers degrees in the field of ayurveda, it also manages the institutes and colleges located in its campus and conducts examinations for the courses in the field of ayurveda offered by it.
