The Indian Law Institute shortly called as ILI came into existence in the year 1956 and the institute was established with the primary objective of promotion and conducting of legal research. The main objectives of the university as laid down its memorandum of Association is cultivation of the science of law, promotion of advanced studies and research in law with a view to meet the economic, social and other needs of the people of the nation and to promote the systematization of law. The institute also aims at encouraging and conducting investigations in law and allied fields for improvement of legal education, to offer education in law and to publish periodicals, books and studies in law. The institute is provided with the best facilities for offering legal education.

The Indian Law Institute acts as an autonomous body under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 and the institute is conferred with the required independence and educational freedom for carrying out its objectives. The institute was conferred with the status of deemed university in the year 2004 through a government order issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Indian Government dated the 29th of October 2004. Minimum eligibility requirement for seeking admission to the Indian Law Institute:

For LL.M course (evening & FT courses), candidate must have completed their Bachelor of Law course with at least 50% of marks. For all PG diploma courses offered by the university except for labour law, the eligibility requirement is that candidates must have completed their graduation in any discipline from a recognized university. For PG Diploma in Labour Law alone, candidates must have completed their degree in law or Master of Arts in Social Science course from a recognized university. Admission of students to the PG Degree courses are done based on the merit secured by candidates in Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the university on its own for admission purpose.

In addition to these courses, the Indian Law Institute also offers Ph. D course in Law for which admission is done based on entrance test conducted by the university on its own, however candidates with valid NET/JRF score are exempted from taking up the entrance test for Ph. D admission.
