Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) was established as a private limited company jointly owned by the Government of India and Government of Travancore, in 1950. IREL was undertaken by the Central Government in 1963. The company is under the administrative control of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The company is engaged in mining and separation of beach sand such as monazite, illmenite, rutile (titanium ores), sillimanite, zircon, etc., and in production of rare earths (Lanthanides) chemicals, thorium nitrate, etc.
