NIT Jamshedpur, National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur
National Institute of Technology formerly Regional Institute of Technology Jamshedpur came into effect from the year 1960, as a Govt. of Bihar and Central Government Institution. It came to be known as National Institute of Technology with the passing of the National Institute of Technology Act 2002, on 27th December 2002, and hence was conferred the status of a Deemed University from the very date and came under the purview of The Human Resource Development Ministry of India on 1st April 2003.
Courses offered
The institute offers both undergraduate and postgraduate engineering courses leading to B.Tech and M.Tech respectively.
The streams in which the 4 year B.Tech course is offered are:
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electronics Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science
- Production Engineering and Management
The postgraduate courses in Engineering are offered in the following streams:
- Extractive Metallurgy (Met. Engg. & Mat. Sc. Deptt.)
- Power System (Electrical Engg.’ Deptt.)
- Surface Science and Engineering. (Chemistry Deptt.)
- Foundry Technology (Met. Engg. & Mat Sc. Deptt.)
- Computer Integrated Design and Manufacturing (Mechanical Engg. deptt.)
The institute also offers 3 year MCA, and Ph.D programs.
Campus
The college is located in the outskirts of Jamshedpur, and has a sprawling lush green woody campus in Adityapur, which spreads to around 320 acres. A River flows aside the campus and the environment is pleasing to study, and the industrial environment of the city provides an environment of toil and hard work, which is perfect for any form of study and research. The campus consists of several institutional buildings housing separate departments, and residential and hostel facilities are available for over 115 of its faculty, and its 1350 students along with 300 odd administrative and support staff. Over 100 laboratories are present in order to satisfy the students of their needs and the requirements of the curriculum.
Admission procedure
For the undergraduate B.tech program admission can be sought out through the central counseling conducted by the central selection committee based on the AIEEE rank of the student conducted by the CBSE, New Delhi.
For the post graduate program admission is done on the basis of the valid GATE score of the candidate.
Placements
Since the institute is located in an industrial city, various local as well as global companies recruit students from the campus. The placement for the year 2009 was 90%.
