Presidency College, Chennai
The history of this college dates back to 1840 when a small preparatory school was opened by Mr.Cooper and his associates. In 1855, the institute was given the present name “Presidency” and the college started functioning from the year 1857 imparting education in the courses prescribed. This institute also has the pride of being the Mother of Madras University.
The construction of the present campus took three years for completion and it was opened by the Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh on 25th March 1870. This college was granted autonomy status in the year 1987.
The management of this prestigious institution is done by the Government of Tamilnadu.
Courses:
The college offers all the major disciplines of study in UG and PG study.
Bachelor of Arts
This course is offered in History, Political Science, Economics, English Literature, Tamil Literature, Hindi Literature, and Urdu Literature.
Bachelor of Science
This is offered in the fields of Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geography and Psychology.
Bachelor of Commerce – Corporate Secretaryship
Master of Arts is offered in the disciplines of History, Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, Tamil, Telugu, and English and Sanskrit literature
Master of Science degree is available for the subjects of Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geography and Psychology.
Master of Commerce
Master of Computer Applications
Master of Science – Applied Microbiology
In addition to the above regular courses, the college also offers various doctoral studies in many disciplines.
Admission and Eligibility:
The admission process is guided by the guidelines and rules lay down by the Government of Tamilnadu from time to time.
Library:
This college has the largest collection of books in its vast library which holds more than 150000 volumes of books. It subscribes to 95 Indian and foreign journals.
Hostel:
Victoria hostel accommodates men and Women students’ hostel provides residence for women.
A grievance cell and a placement cell are added to the services of the college. The placement cell offers updates from the employer on regular basis to the students. Counseling and guidance is also offered to the students for facing interview and developing communication skills.
