Shivaji University was established in the year 1962 under the Government of India. Mr. S.C. Jamir is the Chancellor of the university and Prof. M. M. Salunkhe is on the position of Vice-Chancellor in the university. The university is named after Chatrapati Shivaji, who was the founder of the Maratha Empire. The university was established by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The major idea behind the establishment of the university was to cater to the regional needs of South Maharashtra.
