Pharmacists
INTRODUCTION
The process of making a drug is very complex procedure. This is largely due to the fact that human body is so complex that scientists working in this area have to begin by studying the body functioning and malfunctioning before they can begin identifying preparations with the necessary curative effects. The preparation of drugs requires testing over long periods of time to rule out potential side effects and studying the enduring effects of a preparation. This is generally a very long and expensive process.
Professionals working in drug manufacture are:
• Molecular biologists
• Pharmacologists
• Toxicologists
• Medical investigators
• Pharmacists
Pharmacy is an important arm of the healing occupations and it has roots in scientific study. Pharmacists study the chemistry of drugs, their origin, and procedures for the development of drugs, their preparation, their effect. The past decade has seen more and more pharmacists play vital role in research, processing and manufacture of drugs.
NATURE OF WORK
There are 4 main areas of work available to qualified pharmacists. They could be working as:
• Hospital pharmacists
• Retail pharmacists
• Industrial pharmacists
• Research pharmacists
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work environment may vary immensely with the kind of work a pharmacists does. Retail pharmacists work in drug stores and occasionally have to travel for making stock purchases. The medical representative job is an outdoor exercise with a lot of touring and travelling. The hospital pharmacists work in a laboratory and a medical store. Industrial pharmacists generally work in manufacturing units supervising production.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Pharmacists must have a scientific bent of mind and should have the interest in medicine. The academic acumen of pharmacists can range from average to superior. Pharmacists in research and industries should have excellent academic potential. Sympathetic attitude, caring mannerisms and a friendly disposition are required for dealing with patients.
