Horticulture is the cultivation of garden plants, fruits, flora, vegetables and berries along with, shrubs and trees. Those people who practice horticulture are called as Horticulturists. They study all types of plants and experiment on it for the propagation of plants, crop farming and production, plant reproduction, plant biochemistry/physiology, genetic engineering, etc.
Candidates who wish to join the course of horticulture must have completed their class 10+2. They must have studied PCM or PCB in addition to Agriculture and Home Science. The students should be at least 17 years of age at the time of admission.

Career Prospects
Candidates who have completed their course in Horticulture successfully can find jobs in institutes of Horticulture, vegetable farms, and plantations as well as in fruit groves. Students of horticulture can find employment as farming connoisseurs in vineyards, fruit orchards and agriculture estates. Their services are also needed by beautification institutes and luxury resorts. Many home owners too take the services of skilled horticulturists for creating terrace gardens. A qualified horticulturist can also find jobs as scientists, landscapers, teachers, managers, therapists and assistants in garden art. The monthly salary of an Assistant horticulture inspector begins at Rs 7000 and it may rise up to Rs 17, 000. This depends on the experience and total years of service. The income of a District Horticulture Officer is above Rs 20, 000 per month and the remuneration of scientists will be in between Rs 18, 000 and Rs. 25, 000 each month.
The salary of a person working in the private sector is more when compared to that of someone working in the public sector. As the skills and the experience of a person increases salary will also be increase.
