The Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) was established in the year 1956. The institute offers Educational courses in different areas like Rural Development, Rural Oriented Sciences, Cooperation, Rural Economics and Extension Education, Development Administration, Tamil and Indian Languages, English and Communicative Studies, and Rural Sociology. The university offers excellent programmes that attract even students from abroad. The institute grabbed the attention of the nation mainly because of its immense work. The Government of India (Ministry of Education) offered the status of a Deemed University to the Institute 3rd August, 1976 under the UGC Act of 1956. The university was granted the Deemed University status by the recommendation of the University Grants Commission. The University was granted with Five Star Status in February 2002 by NAAC.
