Gandhigram Rural Institute came into existence in the year 1956 and the university is located in the city of Dindigul at the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The institute was established for carrying on the Nai Talim System of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. In the year 1976, the institute was conferred the status of Central Deemed University by the University Grants Commission located in New Delhi under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. The university is wholly funded by the University Grants Commission and it was given the name as Gandhigram Rural University according to the guidelines of the University Grants Commission.
With devotion of the father of nation’s Nai Talim System of education, the institute has developed its educational programmes in Indian languages, Tamil, Communicative Studies and English, rural sociology, development administration, co-operation, rural oriented schemes, rural economics and extension education and rural development. The work of the institute attracted the attention of nation and the India Government’s Ministry of Education based on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission conferred the status of Deemed University on the institute. Gandhigram Rural Institute has developed into a major educational complex, comprising of seven faculties thereby offering 50 programmes and the university awards certificate, diploma, UG degree, PG degree and doctoral programmes in the seven faculties namely Agriculture & Animal husbandry, Rural health & sanitation, Indian Languages & Rural Arts, English & Foreign languages, rural oriented sciences, rural social sciences and rural development. In the year 2002, the university was conferred with A grade status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
