Gandhigram Rural Institute was founded under the Government of India in the year 1956. The institute is mainly famous for providing various educational courses related to the field of Rural Development, Rural Oriented Sciences, Rural Economics etc. The institute was offered the status of being a Deemed University in the year 1976. The status of deemed university was awarded to institute under UGC Act of 1956 by the Government of India. Actually, it was the idea of University Grants Commission to grant the status of deemed university to the institute. The institute has became a famous or renowned name in the field of education related to rural development.
