UPSC conducts the exam for IFS and one of the optional papers for the appearing candidates is Mathematics (Paper II).  This paper is the second after the first paper, and candidates have to be very clear and efficient in their approach.

Division of the Paper:

There are two sections in the paper, namely Section A and B. Both of the section carries a total of four main questions.

Paper Pattern:

Each of the two sections carries a maximum of four main questions. The first main question in both of the nature is compulsory in nature. The question has a maximum of six sub-questions and candidates have to attempt any five. All of the other six questions from the two sections are divided into four sub-questions. Candidates have to attempt a minimum of three main questions, from the remaining six main questions, attempting at least one from each of the section.

Markings:

The maximum mark of the paper is two hundred and each of the main questions carries a maximum of forty marks. However the sub-questions carry a number of marks which varies as according to the nature of the question.

Time allotted for the examination:

Candidates have to answer all the questions in a time interval of 3 hours. So, from the very beginning they have to plan their approach and answer accordingly, keeping in mind the time duration.
