The Central Ground Water Board, a multi-disciplinary scientific organization, was set up in 1970 by offering this name to the Exploratory Tube wells Organization. The Board works under the Agricultural Ministry of the Indian government. In the year 1972, the Board was united with the Ground Water Wing of the Geological Survey of India.

The Central Ground Water Board has its headquarters at Bhujal Bhawan, Faridabad, Haryana. The Board includes Chemists, Hydrologists, Hydrogeologists, Geophysicists, Hydrometeorologists and Engineers. The head of the Board is the Chairman.

The Board includes four main wings called Sustainable Management & Liaison (SML), Survey, Assessment & Monitoring (SAM), Exploratory Drilling & Materials Management (ED&MM) and Training & Technology Transfer (T&TT).
