Assam University was formed in the year 1994 through the Assam University Act 1989. Right from its formation, the university is growing as a center for excellence in learning. The campus of the university is located at Dargakona, about 20 km from the city of Silchar in the state of Assam.
The campus is spread over 600 acres and it is surrounded by mountains and lakes thereby making it a perfect environment for academic activity. The university has been sustaining a multidisciplinary approach to higher education right from its formation. Nine schools are functioning under the university under major disciplines of education namely technology, management studies, information sciences, environmental sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, languages, humanities and social sciences. The campus of Assam University offers several facilities to the students like hostel, computer centre and library. The university is also offering transportation facilities for students residing in the nearby areas. The university has acquired major scientific equipment for departments like physics, chemistry, ecology & environmental sciences and life sciences. These were acquired with the help of one-time assistance from the University Grants Commission and with the help of the funds obtained from other agencies like CSIR, DAT and DST.
The central library of the university subscribes 12 popular magazines, 16 newspapers, 186 Indian journals and 13 foreign journals and it is having more than 50000 books under different categories of education. The university is also under the process of automation of the library and already more than 25000 books were created with the help of SOUL software under INFLIBNET programme.
