NIOH was founded in the year 1978 in Kolkata. It was declared as an autonomous institution under the control of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of Central Government. The initial objectives of the institute are

  • Undertake development of manpower
  • Services to orthopaedically handicapped
  • Model services for orthopaedically handicapped
  • Conduct and sponsor research to orthopaedically handicapped
  • Provide rehabilitation services to orthopaedically handicapped

The institute provides numerous facilities such as surgical facilities, clinical materials, Arthroscopy, Labs of Physiotherapy, Prosthetics & Orthotics, Gait Laboratory, etc. to the aspirants.

NIOH - Fellowship Award

For the promotion of higher education in the field of disability rehabilitation, the institute offers a fellowship award programme for the candidates. The interested candidates must undertake the research projects under the institute’s priority areas, which will be a part of their higher education.

NIOH - Fellowship Award Eligibility

  • The candidates seeking for the fellowship programme should satisfy any of the following eligibility criteria
  • Candidate must have pursued a postgraduate degree in Rehabilitation or Social Science or Biotechnology or Bio-informatics.
  • Candidate must have pursued an undergraduate degree in Medicine or Engineering and should have a minimum 2 years experience in related field.

NIOH - Fellowship Award Criterion

Those who are selected for the NIOH fellowship award should submit the project work with in 3 months. Also they should look for registration to higher studies by themselves. Those who have already sought admission in PG or Doctoral programmes are also eligible to apply for this award.

The research projects should be any one of the following areas

  • Community oriented service / technology for rehabilitation
  • Disability Bio-informatics
  • Cost effective technology to reach to the un-reached
  • Geriatric Rehabilitation
  • I.T base rehabilitation / Tele rehabilitation
  • Rehabilitation Engineering
  • Design and Development of technology in the area of Prosthetics / Orthotics
  • Developing cost effective technology in rehabilitation service (Medical / Surgical /therapy / Socio-economics)

Value and Duration of NIOH - Fellowship Award

The duration of the Fellowship programme is 3 years. The postgraduates selected for this fellowship award will receive Rs.8000/- per month for JRF and Rs.9000/- per month for the SRF. The undergraduates with experience will receive an amount of Rs.9500/- per month at JRF and Rs.10, 000/- pr month for SRF.

Application Form for NIOH - Fellowship Award

The interested candidates should send an application form as per the prescribed format by the institution. The form should be affixed with a recent photograph of the candidate and must fill all the mandatory fields carefully. This should be enclosed with a CV of the candidate and a detailed description of the proposed project in not more than five pages.
