Birsa Agricultural University came into existence in the year 1981 and the university was inaugurated by the former Prime Minister of India Late Smt. Indira Gandhi. The main purpose behind the establishment of this university is to develop field-specific manpower and technologies for the areas like forestry, animal husbandry and agriculture. The university is offering education and conducting research in three main faculties namely forestry, animal husbandry and agriculture.
Birsa Agricultural University is offering education through 35 departments, three zonal research stations & farms, six directorates, a college of biotechnology and 16 krishi vigyan kendras. This university is wholly a residential university and therefore the campus of the university is provided with residential facilities for staff members and students. Birsa University is awarding Doctor of Philosophy degrees through its Post-graduate faculties on the basis of research-cum-course thesis evaluation. The Ph. D programmes are spread over four semesters, within which students will have to complete 36 hours of research work and 24 credit hours course. The university aims at development of the plateau region and the development of the economic standard of the people belonging to backward and tribal community.
