The city of Amritsar is called as Ambarsar in the local language and the city is located in the north-western part of India. The city is acting as the administrative headquarters of the district of Amritsar in Punjab and it is located at a distance of about 217 kms from the capital of the state of Punjab Chandigarh.

Here are the details about these government colleges in the city of Amritsar in the state of Punjab:

Medical College:

Government College, Amritsar came into existence as a medical school in the year 1864 and the college is presently affiliated to the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. The college is offering MBBS course and MD and MS in different branches of medicine. The college is offering MD in 13 different branches of medicine, while MS course is offered in five different branches of medicine with approval from the Medical Council of India. In addition, it is also offering different para medical courses pertaining to medical lab technology, radiography, etc… Admission of students to the MBBS course offered by the institute is done based on the performance of the students in the Punjab Medical Entrance Test conducted by the Baba Farid University of Health sciences for 85% of seats and remaining 15% of seats are filled based on the All India Entrance Examination conducted by CBSE. Admission of students to the PG courses is done based on the marks secured by the students in the Punjab Post Graduate Test for 75% of seats and All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination for remaining 25% of seats.

Dental College:

Pb. Government Dental College & Hospital, Amritsar is also affiliated to the Baba Farid University of Health Science and the Dental Council of India has approved the college with an intake capacity of 40 students per year for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Course. The college also offers MDS course in different branches like prosthodontics, periodontics, pedodontics, oral surgery and conservative dentistry. The approved intake capacity of the college for conservative dentistry and periodontics courses are two students per year, for oral surgery and prosthodontics are three students per year and for pedondontics it is six students per year.

Arts, Science & Commerce College:

S.R. Government College for Women came into existence in the year 1932 and it is women’s college offering Bachelor of Arts in 14 different subjects, Bachelor of Science in six different subjects and Bachelor of commerce in three different specialties. The college also offers MA in geography and music and different vocational courses with affiliation from the Guru Nanak Dev University.

Polytechnic College:

Mai Bhago Government Polytechnic College for Girls is also meant for women candidates and it offers three-year diploma course in different subjects like modern office practice, architecture assistantship, medical lab technology, computer engineering and electronics & communication engineering.

Other college:

Government Institute of Garment Technology, Amritsar came into existence in the year 1937 and it is affiliated to the state board of technical education. The institute offers three-year diploma course in garment technology and fashion designing.
