Solapur is a city in the state of Maharashtra, which is governed by Municipal Corporation. It is one among the four major districts located in the western part of the state of Maharashtra and the other three districts as Sangli, Kolhapur and Satara. It is the seventh largest populated district in the state of Maharashtra and fourth largest in terms of land area in the state.

Medical College:

Dr. Vaishampayan Memorial Medical College came into existence in the year 1963 and the college offers medical education with affiliation from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences located in the city of Nashik. The college was previously working under the jurisdiction of Shivaji University and the Medical Council of India has approved the college with an intake capacity of 100 students per year for the MBBS course. Previously, the college was working as a private college and in the year 1977, the Government of Maharashtra took over the college. In addition to MBBS course, the college offers Diploma courses in obst. & Gyne., clinical pathology and anesthesiology. The college also offers MD course in the following subjects:

Admission of students to the MBBS course offered by Dr. Vaishampayan Memorial Medical College is done based on the marks secured by the students in the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test conducted by the state government. Government Polytechnic, Solapur came into existence in the year 1956 and the college is affiliated to the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education. The college is governed by the Directorate of Technical Education and the college offers diploma courses through nine departments functioning under it.

Even though, the number of government colleges operating in Solapur is lesser, the city and the whole district of Solapur have a number of colleges under its jurisdiction and these colleges contribute towards the educational development of the state of Maharashtra.
