Sikkim University was established very recently in the year 2007 on the 2nd of July and it started its functions from July 2008. The university was formed under the Sikkim University Act of the year 2006. This university is a central university and the UGC and Human Resource Development ministry of Government of India are striving to make this university as an international known institution.

The university is providing traditional courses in forestry, life and physical sciences and humanities in addition to non-traditional courses pertaining to the state like border studies, mountain studies, ethnic history and hill music and culture. Apart from traditional and non-traditional courses the university is also offering policy studies programmes and all these three are interdisciplinary academic programs of this university. Since the university is at its teething stage, at present only nine colleges are affiliated to the university and the list is as follows:

Government Colleges:

• Sikkim Government College, Tadong, Gangtok, East Sikkim

• Namchi Government College, Upper Kamrang, Namchi South Sikkim

• Rhenok Government College, Rhenok, East Sikkim

• Sikkim Government Law College, Burtuk, Gangtok, East Sikkim

Private Colleges:

• Palantine College, Pakyong, East Sikkim

• Damber Singh College, 6th Mile, Tadong, East Sikkim

• Loyala College of Education, Namchi, South Sikkim

• Harkamaya College of Education, 6th Mile, Tadong, East Sikkim

• Himalayan Pharmacy Institute, Majitar, East Sikkim

Of the above-mentioned colleges, five colleges are offering Bachelor of Arts courses, one college is offering B.Com, one college is offering B. Pharm and M. Pharm, two colleges are offering B. Ed, one college is offering B. Ed and M. Ed, two colleges are offering B. Sc and one college is offering LLB/LLM, which are law courses. Since the main mission of the university is to provide best infrastructural facilities to the faculty members and the students, it has set up a separate library recently in the year 2008.

Within two years of its existence, the library has acquired books from different disciplines like research methodology, sociology, physics, chemistry, botany, political sciences, international relations, economics, LLB, microbiology and pharmacy. The library also has the best collection of international and national magazines and newspapers to help the faculties and students to keep themselves updated about the happenings around the world.
