Fisheries Science is concerned with the catching, conservation ,  managing, marketing and processing of fish  and is treated as one of the most important areas in the field of science .This field is an interdisciplinary one and needs to collect information from different fields like Oceanography, Management ,Economics , Ecology and biology,

Both B.F.Sc. and B.Sc. (Fisheries) are almost same. The course curriculum is designed to study various aspects relating to breeding of fish along with farming and husbandry of important fishes and aquatic organisms. The course of study also includes B F Sc in marine environment, fresh water and brackish water. BFSc or B.Sc. (fisheries) is a 4 year undergraduate course conducted as 8 semesters.

Advantages or Benefits of Doing Bachelor of Fisheries Science

After completing B.F.Sc, the higher option available is to go for M.F.Sc. (Masters of Fisheries Science) or candidates can get into job positions like technicians, biochemist, research assistant, or as biologist etc

Eligibility Criteria for B F SC program

A candidate with a pass in the twelfth standard with the optional subjects as biology and physics along with chemistry can only apply for the test. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi conducts an all India level entrance test for admitting students who are eligible and interested in B.Sc. (Fisheries) or B.F.Sc degree to the Central Institute of Fisheries. Those candidates who are planning to do B.Sc. (Fisheries) or B.F.Sc degree can apply for the exam and score good marks to ensure their admissions in these central institutes. The candidate appearing for the course should be above 17 years of age and should not exceed 20 years.

Admission Procedure for B F SC program

Entrance test for BFSc programs are conducted at both national level as well as university level and those candidates willing to do the course can take the test as per their interest and convenience. The application for the BFSc examination can be collected by post or through website .The candidates who reside near by the university or college can collect it directly from the office. The most important thing the candidate should keep in mind is that the completed application should reach the office of the director of the examination before the date as specified in the notification.

How to fill in B F SC Entrance Application form?

The candidate should fill the application form with enough care according to the instructions provided in the booklet. They should verify the number in the identity card and information bulletin and make sure that these two numbers are the same.

The application form should reach the concerned authority within the date specified in the information bulletin along with a blank envelope and acknowledgement card. The candidates can take a copy of the completely filled application and keep it, so that it will be useful for them in case if needed for further reference. They should fill the application in their own handwriting with black ball point pen. The candidate should provide only true information and any wrong information will result in the rejection of the application from.

B F SC Entrance Exam Pattern

BFSc exam is of objective type with about 180 to 200 multiple choice exams from different areas in PCM and biology. The candidate should write the answers with care as Marks are deducted for each wrong answer and the exam duration is for two and half hours.

B F SC course curriculum

The curriculum followed by various institutes for BFSc is designed by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). To meet the regional requirements, the curriculum and syllabus can be modified or changed by the Academic Council of the AU, but should not vary more than 30% as prescribed by the ICAR. The candidate should score a minimum credit of 160 for the graduate degree excluding the non credit courses. The students need to attend lecture classes, assignments, practical labs etc. They should also do small projects as a partial fulfillment of the course.

B F SC Course Evaluation

The major evaluation method takes into consideration for measuring the performance of the candidate is the midterm exam which is taken as internal marks and is 20% of the total marks and the performance of the candidate in the written exam, taken as external marks which is for 80%. The external examiner based on the syllabus put questions and also evaluates the answer paper of the candidate.  A teacher appointed by the department head helps the course instructor who will take care of the practical examination of the students conducted for internal marks.

Remuneration after a course in BFSC depends on the specialization and job profile of the candidate. One who starts up there career in the private sector get a pay of Rs 6000-8000 per month in the initial stage. The pay scale offered in the government sector varies according to the type of job profile and department, but will be stable. Compared to other posts, position as a researcher in BFSC provides high pay and reputation and is reserved for experienced candidates with doctoral level qualification.
