West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences came into existence in the year 1995 on the 2nd of January and the university is located in the city of Kolkata. The university was established through the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences Act 1995. To university aims at imparting education, training and conducting research in the fields of veterinary and animal sciences, fishery sciences and dairy sciences. The university also aims at meeting the requirements of the farming community in the state of West Bengal. During these period of its existence, the university has been approved as one of the leading institution of the country working towards the upliftment of the socio-economic status of farmers.

Three faculties are functioning under West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences and they are faculty of fishery sciences, faculty of dairy technology and faculty of veterinary & animal sciences. Various departments are functioning under these faculties and some of the departments are:

• Animal Production & Management

• Dairy chemistry

• Fishery economics & statistics

• Fishery engineering

• Dairy engineering

• Animal nutrition

In addition to these, several courses are functioning under each of three faculties functioning under the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences. West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences is entrusted with the following responsibilities:

• To offer education in the branches of dairy technology, fishery Sciences, veterinary & animal sciences and allied disciplines

• To conduct applied and basic research in these fields with a view to ensure enhancement of productivity and advancement of knowledge

• To undertake the development of these sciences and extension thereof in co-operation with the concerned departments of the state of West Bengal for the benefit of rural masses of the state
