Procedure to become a Forensic Scientist
Forensic Scientist is someone who analyzes the physical evidence related to a crime. Forensic scientists prepare reports based on their study which form a legal evidence document. Aspirants who wish to become a forensic scientist need to have minimum 2 years specialized training in Forensic Science or in related courses. In addition to academic qualifications, candidates are required to have professional experience so as to occupy good positions in organizations such as CBI and Intelligence Bureau.
Qualifying Exams
Candidates who wish a career in Forensic Science are required to have a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science from a recognized University. Undergraduate courses in biochemistry, toxicology and criminal justice form the basic eligibility for a career in Forensic Science. Master’s degree in Forensic Science is required for more advanced positions in this area. MBBS students specializing in Forensic Science are also eligible to become a Forensic scientist. Law students can also join in this profession after completing various diploma/ certificate courses in forensic Science. Some of the courses related to Forensic Science are:
- M.Sc Forensic Science

- PG Diploma in Forensic Science & Related Law
- Diploma in Finger Print Examination
- PG Diploma in Digital & Cyber Forensic Science & Related Law
- M.Phil in Forensic science and Correctional Administration
Apart from strong subject knowledge, candidates are required to have excellent observation skills, accuracy and team spirit. Forensic Scientist should not have a criminal background as they work under a judicial System. Most of the openings for Forensic Scientists are in government organizations such as Central Bureau of Investigation, Intelligence Bureau and in Crime Branch of State Police. Aspirants can start their career as trainee forensic scientist.
Who is Eligible to apply?
Candidates who like to join as Forensic Scientists in CBI, Intelligence Bureau and State Police should be Indian citizens. Candidates having professional work experience of 4 to 5 years are preferred. The maximum age limit shall not be more than 55 years at the time of recruitment.
Selection process
Usually recruitment to the post of Forensic Scientists is done by means of screening test and interview. Eligible candidates are required to apply for the exam with relevant documents. Candidates will have to undergo tests in professional and psychological aptitude assessments. Successful candidates will be shortlisted for medical evaluation. Final selection will be based on the performance in the personal interview.
