Procedure to become a Veterinary Doctor after 12th
A Candidate who has completed bachelor degree in Veterinary Science/Animal Husbandry is eligible to become Veterinary Doctor. Higher Secondary education in science stream with Biology as a subject is the minimum educational qualification required for admission. Admission process is done through national level entrance exams such as All India Pre Veterinary Test (AIPVT), All India Common Entrance Examination (AICEE), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University Entrance Test, etc. After completing Bachelor of Veterinary Science (or equivalent), candidates are required to register with State Veterinary Council so as to start practicing as professional ‘Veterinary Doctor’.
Step 1: Obtaining Necessary Educational Qualifications
Candidates who wish to become a Veterinary Doctor should posses certain academic qualifications. After higher secondary education, they can go for under graduation programme in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. Candidates are required to pursue this course from any University recognized by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI). The duration of this course is five years. Some of the reputed institutions in India that offer Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry courses in India are listed below

- College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Maharashtra
- Bombay Veterinary Science College
- Bihar Veterinary College, Patna
- All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Kolkata
Admission to these institutes is based on the performance of candidates in national level entrance exams such as All India Pre Veterinary Test (AIPVT), and All India Common Entrance Examination (AICEE) conducted by Veterinary Council of India. Apart from this, certain colleges such as Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University and West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences conduct their own entrance exam as part of admission procedure.
Step 2: Registering in Veterinary Council of India
Candidates who have completed the course are required to register in State Veterinary Council so as to obtain the license to practice. The license is provided for candidates who complete 6 month internship under the council.
Step 3: Obtaining Higher Education with Specializations
Candidates who have completed graduation in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry can go for higher studies such as Master of Veterinary Science (MVSc). Candidates can take specialisation in the following areas.
- Surgery
- Medicine
- Genetics and breeding
- Pharmacology
- Immunology
- Biotechnology
Step 4: Joining Hospitals as Veterinary Doctor
Candidates with above said qualifications can join as Veterinary doctor in private clinics as well as in government hospitals. Recruitment to government hospitals is carried out as per the notifications issued by state public service commissions. Apart from these, candidates can work with private organizations or can start their own clinics.
