Marine engineering refers to the engineering design and development of ships, boats and other marine vessels. We see that the scope of work, which a marine engineer performs, is vast. Right from maintenance, design, repair, up gradation to ensuring that the ship sails smoothly, all lies in the hand of a marine engineer. Apart from this, their scope of work has increased. Eligibility to become a Marine engineer

In order to become a marine engineer, one has to clear the written examinations conducted by the various institutes. For a Bachelor’s degree course in Marine engineering, one should have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as compulsory subjects at the 10+2 level. The only criterion which remains is that the school or board must be recognized by the government.

For those who wish to do Master’s in Marine engineering, they should have done B.Tech /B.E from a recognized college or Institute. There are certain requirements regarding the height and the eyesight of the candidates must be good. The bachelor’s program is of 4 years duration, whereas the M.E. program is of 2 years duration.

For admission into B.E. in marine engineering, one has to clear exams like;

  • Marine Engineering and Research Institute Exam
  • All India Engineering Entrance Examination
  • All India Common Entrance Test
  • Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test

The actual cost varies from university to university. IIT-Mumbai and T S chanakya offer some rebate in fees for SC/ST students.

Scope after doing Marine Engineering

One can get excellent job offers after completing this course. They can be absorbed in various roles in variety of areas like;

Apart from this, marine engineers can get job opportunities in the government sector as well. Many state owned shipping companies are there in India. Also, Indian navy requires marine engineers. A junior engineer can expect a starting salary of Rs.25, 000 per month apart from free food and accommodation. A senior engineer can get up to Rs. 1 lakh per month.
