Diagnostic medical sonographers are the medical professionals who are trained to evaluate the diverse parts of human body by means of the ultrasound technology. The images of particular affected body parts are created with the help of high frequency sound waves. These images are used to examine the disorder and give proper diagnosis.

These professionals use special devices to direct the high frequency sound waves into the affected areas of patients’ body part. They operate the concerned devices and collect the reflected echoes and by using this device an image of the affected parts can be recorded. The diagnostic medical sonographers can specialize in various areas such as obstetric and gynecologic sonography, nuerosonography, abdominal sonography and breast sonography. There are numerous paths for a candidate to enter in the field of diagnostic medical sonography. The candidates usually need an associate degree or bachelor’s degree in related field to become professional in this area. They can pursue the training from any universities or colleges, vocational technical institutions, hospitals or even from the Armed Forces. Some of the training programmes will require students with relevant experience in other healthcare profession.

Many colleges and universities in the country offer this formal training, i.e. associate degree or bachelor’s degree, which is for duration of two or four years. Some employers may also recruit the candidates with vocational certificate in diagnostic sonography. But these certificate programmes are only useful for those who are already in the healthcare profession.

Who is eligible to apply?

The students who have pursued the higher secondary education with biology can apply for the associate degree or bachelor’s degree in diagnostic sonography or related field. They can also apply for the training in this field in any hospitals, universities, vocational technical institutions that offers it. Most of the employers require candidates with relevant experience.
