Physiology and pathology are two separate segments in science, though they both are related by means of study of cells of both plants and animals. Pathology is related to the examining and study of tissues, organs, body fluids and cells as to find out the cause and effect of diseases. At the same time Physiology deals with the corporeal, mechanical and bio-chemical development in living organisms.

Both subjects need to have a bachelor’s degree for entry level jobs. Masters degree or a Doctoral degree would help them to enter in to research field of physiology and pathology.

Pathology Career and Opportunities

Pathologists are scientists who carry out research on biological and medical causes and its effects on diseases of both plants and animals. It is a vast field of study which focuses on the change and effects in internal organs, tissues and cells. Pathologists furthermore carry out postmortem examinations. They can also find out the extent of the effect of treatment and whether it had helped the patient. Some pathologists work as medical examiners or consultants.

Most of the pathologists find jobs in hospitals, labs, colleges etc. They are capable of entering in to teaching or laboratory research work. Pathologists will find jobs in government agencies, agricultural sector, law and other fields.

Physiology Career and Opportunities

Physiology deals with the study and understanding of how living beings function. This is a foundation which helps to understand and treat the disease accordingly. Physiology understands the environmental impacts and fundamental biological functions of the body. It has a major role in the research work. Some of the Physiology study includes pharmacology, neuro-physiology, cell and tissue function and many more.

Most of the Physiologist needs to have a basic degree in Physiology and for further higher studies a Doctoral degree in Physiology with human Physiology. This includes dentistry, physiotherapy, occupation therapy etc.

Physiologists are mostly absorbed in well-equipped laboratories. Some even enter in to the teaching field and become lecturer in universities. A large number of Physiologists work with healthcare institutions and execute duties with cooperation from doctors, nurses and other staffs.   A physiologist can get opportunities to work with agricultural and veterinary research institutes too.

Key Differentiators between career in Pathology and Physiology

A pathologist possibly will investigate the reason or causes of demise of a human being while a physiologist studies the entire nature of a living thing.

Pathology endeavors in finding reasons for the concerning problem which had affected human body. In the mean time, physiology attempts to unearth the association of movements, reproduction and chemical proceedings and results in a plant or animal.

Physiology inquires and finds answers for the query of ‘how things function.’
