The Institute of Company Secretaries of India awards the certificate of bestowing the designation of Company Secretary (CS) to a candidate qualifying for the membership of the Institute.

Exam pattern CS Executive Group 1

The course of CS Executive Group 1 is widely pursued and has tremendous future too if qualified. One of the important papers of this course is the paper of Tax Laws. This paper is absolutely relevant and required for this course. This paper carries total marks of 100. This paper is divided into Part A and Part B. From Part A, a total of four questions need to be answered including the 1st question which is compulsory. From Part B, a total of two questions need to be answered. The total number of questions in this paper is eight.

Duration of Tax Laws paper in CS Executive Group1 exam:

The allotted duration for this paper is three hours. Time management must be done efficiently to score well in this paper.

Scoring pattern:

Answers with required logic and good information content fetch a good score. Illogical concepts should not be applied while answering.

There are three stages to this exam. You need to begin with the foundation course which is the basic level. You need to prepare in areas like Economics, Law, English, Accountancy and also Management studies. The next level which is the executive level requires preparation in areas like Management and Cost Accountancy, Labour Law, Income Tax and also Securities Law. The next level which is the final level includes the Corporate reforms, Advance law, Taxation, Forex Management and also Treasury Management. There will also be areas like Trade ethics, Governance, Tax practices etc. Along with this it is a must to complete the internship training. You would purchase a prospectus for Rs 200 from ICSI for detailed information.

The company secretary is a 3 years professionals course equivalent to undergraduate degree.
The course is divided into 3 level:

(1)Foundation course-8 months
It comprises of business environment,entrepreneurship,management,communicat ion,ethics,accounting and economics.

(2)Executive course-9 months
It comprises of company law, tax law, general law, commercial law, accounts and audit law and securities law.

(3)Professional course-15 months
It comprises of company secretaries practices, financial and treasury management.

Note:students who cleared CA foundation from Institute of chartered accountant of India or foundation exam from Institute of cost accountants of india need not to write the CS foundation exam and can enter into CS executive through ICSI direct entry scheme.


In the last module of the course,the CS has the option to choose any of the following and could be specialized in one field.
(1)Banking law and practice
(2)capital,commodity and money market
(3)insurance law and practice
(4)intellectual property rights-law and practice
(5)international business-law and practice.
