As IGNOU(Indira Gandhi National Open University) is a recognised University, so finishing BCA Degree you are eligible for IAS, Civil Service Exam.

To become an IAS(Indian Administrative Service) officer one has to apply, appear and crack Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC every year.

The eligible candidate must be an Indian National having either appear for the final Graduation Degree exam or pass in any stream from a recognised University within the age of 21 to 30 years with upper age relaxation for reserved candidate.

IAS / IPS / IFS are the Civil service posts and the recruitment for which is made by the Union Public Service commission for the post in Central Govt. departments. Civilservice exams are considered to be the toughest exam of India.
The minimum eligibility criteria requires for applying to the Civil service posts it is as follows :-
a) Must be a citizen of India
b) Age limit should be 21-30 years.
c) Educational qualification :-
Must has passed out Graduation in any discipline from a recognized university which comes under UGC.
Relaxation provided by the Govt. for candidates in terms of age is as follows :-

You have completed BCA degree from IGNOU .

So you are applicable for IAS exam because IGNOU(Indira Gandhi National Open University) is a recognized University .

IAS exam is conducted by UPSC through Civil Service Exam.

The candidates must have graduation degree from the recognized university are applicable for IAS Exam . Final year student who appeared in last year exam can also apply for UPSC prelims exam.

IAS Exam: Educational Qualification


A candidate must hold a degree of any of the. Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification.


NOTE I: Candidates who have appeared at an examination the passing of which would render them educationally qualified for the Commission’s examination but have not been informed of the results as also the candidates who intend to appear at such a qualifying examination will also be eligible for admission to the Preliminary Examination.

All candidates who are declared qualified by the Commission for taking the Civil Services (Main) Examination will be required to produce proof of passing the requisite examination along with their application for the Main Examination failing which such candidates will not be admitted to the Main Examination.

NOTE II: In exceptional cases the Union Public Service Commission may treat a candidate who has not any of the foregoing qualifications as a qualified candidate provided that he has passed examination conducted by other institutions, the standard of which in the opinion of the commission justifies his admission to the examination.

NOTE III: Candidates possessing professional and technical qualifications which are recognized by Government as equivalent to professional and technical degree would also be eligible for admission to the examination.

Yes, you can apply for IAS exam after completing BCA from IGNOU.

This is because you ave done a degree programme from a distance education.


It does not matter whether you do a bachelor's degree form a regular college or through correspondence.

Only thing required is GRADUATION FROM A RECOGNISED UNIVERSITY.

Yes, diploma either from a regular course or through correspondence is not accepted by UPSC.

So, you have to be a graduate, which you are.

Other eligibility criteria for IAS exam is age.

Age criteria for IAS exam -

If you are a general category then you should be between 21 years to 30 years.

If you are an OBC category then you should be between 21 years to 33 years.

If you are a SC/ ST category then you should be between 21 years to 35 years.

IAS exam is conducted by UPSC every year and is conducted in three stages.

First is preliminary exam, which is objective type.

YES, you can appear for the UPSC Civil Servcices exams, even if you have finished your Graduation from IGNOU

UPSC has still not released the notifications for the 2013 UPSC Civil services Prelims exams.

Eligibilty to apply is:
Education: Graduation pass in any Stream

AGE- Minimum 21 years
Maximum 30 years
Candidates belonging to OBC gets 3 years and SC/ST gets 5 years age relaxations

ATTEMPTS- General candidates- 4 times
OBC- 7 times
SC/ST- No such restriction

Basically your concerned is over the distance education degree. Well there is nothing to be worried about because even candidates who have completed degree through distance education are eligible for Indian Administrative Service.

Which means that you can appear for the Indian Administrative Service after completing the degree from IGNOU. I hope that would calm down all your fears. The Civil Service Examination is open for all graduation degree holders.

The exam is conducted in two stages. First is called preliminary exam. There are two written tests in it. Here your goal is to only qualify for the second stage. The marks obtained in preliminary exams are not added in your final tally.

Second stage is Main Examination. There are 9 written tests in the main examination including language papers as well general studies and optional subjects. The marks obtained in main examination would be your final score.

Yes, you can apply for IAS. Graduation from any recognized University is the basic qualification required. Age of the applicant must be below 30 years. UPSC conducts selection process, through written test and interview. Prelims for IAS are usually conducted in the month of May.
