Yeah for sure !

you can select that subject as your optional but you should not select more than one subject of the same stream.

For example : In engineering No candidate is allowed to select Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering even if you have opportunity to select because it will be again the same old competition..

This is why they don't allow the subjects of same stream there should be atleast one other subject which you have to select.

So along with your history of arts you can choose any other subject which is not of your stream.

Arabic, Assamese, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Marathi, Malayalam, Manipuri, Nepali, Oriya, Pali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.

You can choose subjects in which you have good knowledge, no matter whether it is your course subject or.

Following are the optional subjects out of which you will have to select any two subjects and the most important of all, both of them should belong to different stream:

Yes,you obiously can select History as your optional .

But in history you have to lern and write a huge no of notes , which is so much timefull. and in IAS you can not choose more than one subject as an optional.
