RAW [Research and Analysis Wing] recruits its officers mainly from IPS, IAS and Military Officers. Executive grade officers like Field Officers and Field Assistants are recruited through Cabinet Secretariat.

By reading these threads, i come to understand the deepest level of ignorance we have about the security services in general & intelligence agencies in particular. My observations are:
1) MY HEART SINGS FOR INDIA.This is deep shit. If your heart sings for India, then do your daily job honestly. Be a disciplined Indian. Follow rules of the land & excel in your trade. That will amount to service to India. 2) I am desperate to get into intelligence. Maybe you are. Don%u2019t get influenced by bond movies. Bond girls are fiction & so are bond cars & numerous gadgets. Get real. Intelligence agencies approach you. You cannot approach them. It%u2019s foolish to expect that. If you are smart, they will contact you. If you are smarter, then they will reject you. Guys, learn about the word called %u2018Cultural Fit%u2019. 3) The roles & functions vary. A scientist, a mathematician, a language expert, a technician can be recruited. I am not a spy myself. But I know for sure that roles vary & so does responsibilities. With the kind of stress these people undergo, you certainly can%u2019t expect them to function till age of 60. Its not a permanent commission. There are no Geneva guidelines to protect you. If you are not properly covered by bureaucratic protections, then you are fucked. 4) Job can be boring & routine. It can be tedious. There is nothing macho in that. Get your adrenalin under control. Wit & pragmatism is already scarce in this field. |

Hello Sir/Madam,
I understand that any nation's security forces invest significantly in cyber intelligence and security. From the evolving nature of the cyber threats, it is also evident that these agencies are affected considerably by staff shortage. My question is: Does R & AW have a position for such a domain? Is it possible for a civilian who specializes in this domain of information security and cyber intelligence to seek in R & AW? Please do let me know. Many thanks in advance. -- Jai Hind |

RAW came in existent after Sino-Indian war of 1962 and the India-Pakistani war of 1965. Government of India realized that a specialized, independent agency was required for competent external intelligence gathering.
The R&AW has its headquarters in New Delhi, and the current director of the organization is Sanjeev Tripathi, a 1973 Uttar Pradesh batch IPS officer who later shifted to the R&AW Allied Service (RAS) cadre. R&AW has been organized on the lines of the CIA. The Director of R&AW is designated "Secretary (Research)" in the Cabinet Secretariat. Most of the previous Directors have been experts on either Pakistan or China. child agencies of RAW- The Aviation Research Centre The Radio Research Center Electronics & Tech. Services National Tech. research and analysis wing is a specialised intelligence agency in which the higher intelligence posts are mainly filled by ips officers after a certain amount of experience. also many officers from ib and cbi are deputed to raw. hence direct recruitment in raw is only for field intelligence officers which is generally taken by the deptt. itself and the info. is avialable on employment news whenever such exams are taken.
