Basically what you are talking about is lateral entry scheme. This scheme allows candidates who have completed either diploma in Engineering or B.Sc to get admission in the second year of Engineering course.



Since you have completed diploma in Mechanical Engineering, you are eligible for admission in B.Tech via lateral entry scheme. May I recommend that you choose Mechanical Engineering as the subject for B.Tech. The reason i said it because a lot of students find it very hard if change the stream in Engineering course. Therefore my recommendation would be Mechanical Engineering for you.



Now coming back to getting admission in the second year of B.Tech. The simple process is to apply for B.Tech via lateral entry scheme. Most universities in India offer lateral entry scheme. The only exception are the IITs.



Like I said that most universities in India offer admission on lateral entry scheme. Engineering colleges reserve 10 to 20 percent seats for the lateral entry scheme. The procedure of admission is different for each university.

Mainly there is no need to appear in entrance exam. Please remember that candidates who have completed diploma in Engineering are not eligible to appear in IIT-JEE or the AIEEE entrance exam. The basic requirement for both these exams after 10+2 with PCM as the subjects.



Instead you can appear in the LEET entrance exam which is for the lateral entry in Engineering college around India.



Some colleges would also give you direct admission based on the performance in Engineering course. If you have scored at least 60 percent marks in the diploma in Engineering then there is a good chance that college would give you direct entry.


However some may require you to appear in a written test, it is different from the LEET entrance exam since some universities conduct writtest test of their own.

Yes, you can get the directly admission in 2nd year of b.tech course after completing the diploma mechanical course through LEET or LATERAL Entry exam or other state govt entrance exams conducted by the corresponding university.

For writing the LEET or LATERAL Entry entrance exam, required educational qualifications are you must completed the 10+3 from any recognized university with minimum 55% of marks. For admission in directly 2nd year of b.tech course, the selection procedure is based on the marks secured at entrance exam only.
