IAS Stands for Indian Administrative Service examination and this examination is conducted by Union Public Service Commission Once in a year.

To become a IAS officer then the candidate need to crack the civil service examination and the civil service examination can be divided into three stages 1)Preliminary 2)Main examination 3)Personal Interview.

Preliminary examination has two sections and each section consist of 200 marks.Both sections are objective types questions.

Lets see the preliminary pattern for Civil Service examination :-

Preliminary Pattern :-

Paper - I(200 Marks) Duration :- Two hrs.

-Current Events of national and International Importance
-History of India and Indian National Movements
-Indian and World Geography
-Indian and Polity Governance
-Economics and Social development
-General Issues
-General Science

Paper - II(200 Marks) Duration :- Two hrs.

-Comprehension
-Interpersonal Skills Including communication skills
-Logical reasoning and analytical ability
-Decision making and Problem Solving
-General mental ability
-Basic Numeracy
-Data Interpretation
-English Language Comprehension Skills

You have to prepare this topics for preliminary examination and after clearing in the preliminary examination.The candidate are called for the Main examination.

Main Examination Pattern :-



Eligibility Criteria for IAS :-

The candidate should be completed graduate degree with any desire subject from a recognized University or equivalent qualification with minimum pass marks in their examination and final year of graduate degree can apply for IAS examination.The candidate age limits for this examination is 21 years to 30 years at the time of appearing for this examination and relaxation is given to the various reserved categories.

IAS exam is conducted by UPSC through CSAT exam.

Those candidate are graduate from any recognized university with any discipline are eligible for IAS exam.

But your age should be in between 22 to 30 years old.Age relaxation is provide for SC/ST/OBC category as per govt rule.

The maximum attempts for SC/ST candidate is Unlimited. For OBC candidate it is 7 years and for general candidate it will be 5 years.

Also you must be in citizen in India.

IAS - INDIAN ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICE, to become an IaS officer you have to appear for the Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC every year.


The eligible candidate must be an Indian National having appeared for the final graduation degree exam or passed from any stream of education from a recognised University within the age of 21 to 30 years age. The upper age is relaxed for OBC category candidate up to 3 years and that for SC/ST/PH category up to 5 years, is eligible to apply for Civil Service Exam.

The selection is through three phases:-

CSAT- Civil Service Aptitude Test- Preliminary exam which comprises of all objective type questions.

Civil Service Main Exam. which comprises of all subjective type questions.

Personal Interview.

As this examination is one of the toughest and competitive exam so at least one year hard work is necessary before sitting in the exam. The preparation should be according to the syllabus as provided for the Civil Service exam.

I have got 48.5% in my 12th and 72% in my 10th.
Can i aaply for MBA or UPSC exams?
