I am a mechanical student and will be attending the gate 2016 exam . I would like to know what is the minimum marks/ Rank that ill need to get to get a shot at the PSU jobs. I ll be attending the same under the scheduled category.

GATE stands for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It has become the entrance for M.Tech as well as for jobs in Public Sector Undertakings.

There are so many public sector undertakings which recruit candidates on the basis of GATE scorecard like IOCL, BHEL, SAIL, ONGC etc.

The rank for different PSU is different, however if you score a rank below 500, most probably you will get a job in any of the top PSU for mechanical engineers. Marks is expected around 65-75 for general category candidates, 50-65 for OBC candidates and 50-60 for SC/ST candidates.

If you want a PSU job on the basis of GATE 2016 score as a fresher then you must have a score above 90 percentile then only you have any chance of selection. Also, your academics and performance in interview will also have an impact on selection.

Therefore, try to score as good as you can. There is a very high competition for PSU jobs and only top candidates get the nod.

This is an objective paper of 100 marks and consists of 65 questions. Generally every year the cut off marks is between 20-30 marks for candidates of different category. But for getting shortlisted for jobs in PSUs cut off marks is not sufficient.

You will have to score good marks that will enhance increase your rank at national level. For top PSUs like NTPC, BHEL, SAIL, GAIL, ONGC etc, you must score at least above 65 marks then you will have good chance of getting a call from any PSUs.
