i considering taking next year off my work and work in India for about a year where i get the chance to help the poor and those in need. do you recommend a good organization that i can apply to?

Dear friend
There are many NGOs working for the growth of poor and backward people. If you are seriously interested in helping such people you can join any of them.
As these NGOs are for public welfare so they need as many hands as possible, so there is no hard and fast procedure to join a particular NGO. Just get the office contact, meet the concerned person and show your interest to work for the same.
If you are capable of raising funds for them then do raise funds as well but that is not necessary to be a part of an NGO.
Currently the biggest problem in India is Corruption which arises because literate people take advantage of helpless and illiterate people so the very first thing to be cured is Education.
